The 12th International Conference on Bulk Materials Storage, Handling and Transportation held in Darwin was the first conference that I have attended since starting my research. As I was presenting at this conference I was initially quite nervous, however, as I watched others I felt more relaxed and excited about presenting my research to others in the bulk materials handling field.

The international nature of the conference was also very inspiring, I was able to talk with people from all over the world and hear their thoughts on my work on modelling powder flows and dust generation mechanisms.

One presentation in particular presented by André Katterfeld from the University of Magdeburg in Germany titled “Simulation of the Dynamic Interaction between Bulk Material and Heavy Equipment: Calibration and Validation” showed the ability to couple the Discrete Element Method (DEM) with Machine Dynamics. This presentation was both informative and interesting when examining the ability of the bulk material to influence the machine simulation. The coupling aspect of this work was quite inspiring as my area of research is also related to the coupling of DEM, however with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and provided insight into the use of open source codes which is something that I am very interested in pursuing.
