Exciting and innovative work on anti-fouling coating systems is underway in the Steel Research Hub by PhD candidate Brianna Knowles, Research Associate Paul Molino and Associate Professor Michael Higgins.

Based on the application of zwitterion-functionalised silica nanoparticles, this research aims to develop versatile fouling-resistant coatings that help prevent the attachment of algae and bacteria to surfaces, such as coated steel surfaces. In collaboration with Pawel Wagner (IPRI, UOW) and Shane Maclaughlin (BlueScope), the research findings were published recently in the American Chemical Society’s Applied Materials and Interfaces Journal.  A UOW Media Release coincided with both Brianna’s excellent presentation to the Steel Hub’s Advisory Council on 26 June 2017, as well as with an interview on ABC Radio Illawarra the following day.  Congratulations to this team.
